Dear Fairy Godmother,

When I was younger, I made a friend, but now a few years later, her behavior has started to change. She doesn't always act the kindest to me—in fact, she outright insults me at times. I'm not sure if I should be her friend anymore, but if I give up on her I’ll lose a good friend. What should I do?

Dear Damsel,

Friendships can be wonderful, but can also be difficult. Every kind of relationship takes work. (Most of them are worth it.) I don’t take it lightly when one comes to an end—and it sounds like you don’t either.

I’m not sure how close you are with your friend, but if you feel you can, I recommend telling her how you’ve been feeling. If you approach it gently, she should be open to hearing your side, and if she cares about the friendship, she’ll change.

Explaining how you’re feeling and giving her a chance to fix things is a good first step, but if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, it might be time to let the friendship end on its own: slowly and naturally.
